FACING AN ARMED ROBBER
Each year, half a million people come face to face with an individual wielding a gun. Nothing increases your chances of survival more than cooperation: Hand over any possessions that an armed robber demands. But if it appears as though the person is going to kidnap or kill you, it's time to fight back. Be prepared:
» To stop a gunman from firing, grab the gun's cylinder with your hand and squeeze as hard as you can — if the cylinder can't spin, the gun won't fire.
» You can also try grabbing the weapon and putting your finger between the hammer (the part that cocks back) and the gun, so it doesn't fire.
» Place your other hand on the gun and twist hard inwardly; most people can't hold onto a revolver if you do this.
» Remember: Most revolvers hold only six bullets. If you count six shots, the gun could be empty. It takes 10 to 15 seconds to fully reload a revolver, so you may have time to fight or flee.
