Leaping to Safety
Whether you're trapped in a burning structure or an intruder has broken into your home, sometimes the only way to survive is to jump out of your building. Here's how to do this maneuver without risking your life. Be prepared:
» Look below to see whether there is something that might break your fall but not your bones.
» People's natural tendency is to tense up when they jump, but it's better to relax as much as possible to avoid injury when landing.
» If you land feet first, try to keep falling forward in the direction that you're going and end with a rolling motion to absorb the impact.
» Hang off the balcony before you drop down. This will shorten your fall by five or six feet and cause less damage when landing.
