Healthful Advice From Florence Henderson
Here's the story of a lovely lady named Florence Henderson. Famous for playing TV's beloved Carol Brady, Henderson is now the co-host of "Lifetime's Speaking of Women's Health," alongside Rachel Campos. It's a natural fit. Henderson has long been an advocate for women's health, appearing at fund-raisers and conferences and visiting patients. We sat down to talk with Henderson about her job:
Lifetime: What inspired you to become a host of "Speaking of Women's Health"?
Henderson: I'm excited about getting good health information out there to women. I've always been interested in health and helping people I'm basically a frustrated doctor.
Lifetime: What's your definition of good health?
Henderson: When the mind, body and spirit are in harmony. You need to feel well in all three areas to have good health.
Lifetime: What are your top health concerns?
Henderson: Osteoporosis is one of them. I had no idea I had this condition until I was on the "Today" show and we did a piece on it. I had a bone-density test done and was totally shocked. Now, I'm a real advocate for educating others about it. I'm also an advocate for the hearing impaired, since I once suffered from otosclerosis, which caused me to go almost totally deaf. And I'm very involved with City of Hope, an organization that helps people with life-threatening illnesses. I like to visit patients myself. I'm a very hands-on person.
Lifetime: What are some of this season's most compelling episodes of "Speaking of Women's Health"?
Henderson: The show on grief is definitely one of them. I lost my husband last September. My hypnotherapist really helped me through it. I interviewed her on the show, and it was really moving. And my dear friend Judge Judy came on for a well-done segment on colon cancer. Judy's best friend has it and her mother died of this disease.
Lifetime: What's the best health advice you've received?
Henderson: Place your health in high priority. We women usually take care of ourselves last. We put our family and children first. It's important for you to be in good health so you can do more for those you love.
